Discussion 1:
I think something that was done really well was the scenery and the music. Specifically the intro of the movie really set the tone of the narrator and the upcoming plot. Something that stood out to our group was how each character was portrayed by a specific gesture. The genie, the bird, and Aladdin all had a specific gesture that depicted their character. We also discussed how wealth was portrayed as having rare animals and birds rather than having gold or materialistic objects. Humor was also another major contributing factor to the movie. The audience could still relate to the humor throughout the story although the story was told from an older perspective. This goes to show that we can still relate to the story.
Discussion 2:
Something that was problematic in the movie was how princess Jasmine got married at such a young age. We as the audience are not quite aware of her age in the movie, but she does get married at 16 which is not considered “normal” to most people nowadays. We also discussed the visual graphics throughout the movie and how people were threatened to get their nose cut off if they did not follow a certain rule or policy. This goes to show how the movie also degrades Arabic people for having a bigger nose compared to other races. We also discussed how the movie uses inappropriate language such as the word “pussy cat” which may and most likely will affect younger kids in the long run. This is another reason as to why this movie should not be considered a kid’s movie because of the verbal language throughout the story. The movie is overall very problematic especially towards the younger audience.
Discussion 3:
Disney’s Aladdin should be a kid’s movie only if the parents guide their children as they watch the movie. Factors such as the language discussed in the movie degrades the princess which is something that should not be shown to younger children since it is not right. Also the age at which the princess got married is something that has deeper meaning. As discussed during class most people, specifically kids will not fully pay attention to the age at which the princess got married at. They are more concerned about the fantasy in which the movie portrays.
Marez! I really enjoyed your points that made within this piece. It is clear that you thought out what you really wanted to say and it only made your points a lot stronger. I found that your last discussion was super cool and interesting. I completely agree with you that the parents should get to decide whether or not they want to show the movie to their kids. In addition if they do show it, they should explain what is problematic with it once their kids are old enough to understand or if they concerned about their attitude and behavior from it. In conclusion, it was interesting to see how we both had similar viewpoints and you did great job putting your thoughts on the page.
